Ultrasound Elective - Unit 3
Topics
Cardiac
Thoracic
IVC/Volume
Objectives
Cardiac
1. Describe the clinical indications for the exam.
2. Describe the examination technique and the standardized views (subcostal, parasternal and apical).
3. Identify anatomic structures visualized during a cardiac exam (cardiac chambers, valves, pericardium and aorta).
4. Understand estimates of cardiac activity and qualitative assessment of left ventricular function.
5. Recognize the finding of pericardial effusion with and without tamponade.
6. Recognize dialated aortic root (>4.5) and or descending aorta and clinical review.
7. Recognize right ventricular dilatation with symetrical right and left ventricular size (apical 4 chamber), septal flattening, the signifigance of wall thickness, under filled left ventricle and Miconal sign.
8. Discuss how estimates of cardiac function and central venous pressure can be applied to guide resuscitation in patients with cardiopulmonary instability.
Thoracic
1. Discuss the clinical indications and limitations of the exam.
2. Describe the examination technique and the standardized views for detecting pneumothorax, pulmonary edema and pleural effusions.
3. Describe the sonographic pitfalls.
IVC & Volume Assessment
1. Estimate central venous pressure grossly through IVC compliance.
Hands on Experience
Scan in the department.
Quiz
